Matěj Čadil (born December 5, 1985) is a Czech artist and graphic designer known for his richly detailed illustrations inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium. He lives with his family in Prague, Czech Republic. A self-taught artist, Čadil has been shortlisted multiple times for the Tolkien Society Awards and is the creator of Angrenost.cz, a major Czech-language Tolkien resource. In 2025 and 2026 respectively, he designed the official t-shirts for Oxonmoot and Westmoot. His artwork is characterized by a hand-colored style, ornamental borders, and meticulous attention to detail, capturing the essence of Tolkien’s world.[1]

Tolkien-inspired Work

His love of Middle-earth began when his father introduced him to Tolkien's books at a young age, sparking his passion for creating illustrations inspired by the rich descriptions found in Tolkien's writings.[2] He is a self-taught artist with a passion for drawing and painting that began in childhood.[3] In her 2026 Amon Hen interview, fellow Tolkien artist Miriam Ellis has praised Čadil’s illustrations for their folkloric charm and shared commitment to accuracy.[4]

Matěj Čadil is not only a prolific Tolkien artist but also the founder of Angrenost.cz, a Czech website launched in 2001 that serves as a rich resource for fans of Tolkien’s legendarium. He has started making Tolkien-inspired art at first to illustrate this website.[5][6]

As an artist, he works with a variety of mediums including pen, colored pencils, watercolors, oil pastels, charcoal, and occasionally oils and acrylics on canvas. Recently, he has incorporated digital tools into his creative process.[3]

His illustration "The Curious Fox" was shortlisted for Best Artwork in Tolkien Society Awards 2022.[7] Again, two years later, his artwork "The Road Goes Ever On" was shortlisted for the Tolkien Society Awards 2024.[8] And again the following year, his illustration "Niggle’s Wet Bicycle Ride” was shortlisted for the Tolkien Society Awards 2025.[9]

His art has been featured in Beyond Bree calendars since 2023.[10]

In a 2023 interview for "Dragón Verde," a magazine of Sociedad Tolkien Colombia Orodruin, he shared insights into his personal life, mentioning his love for his hometown of Prague and his affinity for history, architecture, and cartography as well as nature, particularly the forests and mountains. He mentioned that one of his favourite Tolkien characters is Bilbo, reflecting his personal connection to the character's adventurous and homely sides. Matěj expressed his openness to future projects related to Tolkien's world and his desire to illustrate books or collaborate on projects related to the beloved author's works.[2]

In 2025, Čadil was commissioned to create the official t-shirt design for Oxonmoot 2025. The artwork, titled The Star of Hope, evokes the poignant moment from The Return of the King when Sam Gamgee sees a star through the darkness of Mordor and hope returns to him. This design was praised for its emotional depth and faithful resonance with Tolkien’s themes.[11] He also designed the official T‑shirt for Wesmoot 2026, featuring new artwork inspired by the arrival of the black fleet to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.[12]

He has been actively participating in various Tolkien-related events (such has the annual TolkienCon in Prague), showcasing his artwork, selling prints and engaging in discussions with attendees, sharing insights into his creative process and discussing his illustrations.[13]

Other Projects

He is also the author of several publications devoted to the history and architecture of Prague's churches, for which he also drew the title illustrations.[14] His interests include history and cartography, nature, especially forests and mountains, and classical art.[6]
