In Middle-earth Role Playing, Mornost (S. Dark Fortress) was a citadel of Morgoth in the far north of the Fire Tundra in Forodwaith. After the War of Wrath, it had been reduced to a ruin.[1]
When the fortress was destroyed, it caused a collapse of the Under-deeps underneath, leading to the formation of the the Rifts of the Under-deeps (S. Cirith-i-Nudevyn, La. Sisäänkäytävä Alateihin), two massive ravines which spanned from Mornost in the north and ended a bit before Morgoth's Well in the south. Vile creatures sometimes emerged from the ravines, but most denizens of the Under-deeps preferred the warmth below.[2] The proper entrance to this part of the Under-deeps was located in the collapsed lowest cellars of Mornost.[1]
The black stones with which the fortress was made burned like fire when touched by exposed skin, though they provided no actual warmth. The cause of this was attributed to either a specific bane woven into the citadel, or merely the lingering malice of Morgoth.[1]
