Hello! My name is Ramon and I'm a lawyer from Brazil. I'm the creator of both Projeto Tolkien and Compendium Tolkien.
My relationship with Middle-earth
I've first met J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium through Peter Jackson's movies (as I guess most people did), which I first watched when I was a kid. I bought my first copy of The Fellowship of the Ring in 2009, but, after many failed attempts, I finally fully read it for the first time in 2017 (when I also read the other two volumes and The Hobbit - yes, I read The Hobbit after The Lord of the Rings).
Even though since then I've read basically all Tolkien books with the exception of The History of Middle-earth, which hadn't been published in Brazil at the time, in 2021 I felt like I didn't really understand how Middle-earth actually worked, so I decided to reread all the books, in their original order of release, while consulting guides, maps, family trees and, obviously, Tolkien Gateway.
Immediately after starting this new project of mine I thought to myself: why not share it with other people? It was then that I created the Projeto Tolkien (Portuguese for "Tolkien Project"), a YouTube channel whose main objetive was to summarise, with details, all J.R.R. Tolkien's works, starting with The Silmarillion.
The first video was published in January 25 of 2022, and, about two years later, in March of 2024, I decided to finally create Compendium Tolkien, which I had always dreamed to create and can be summarized as "the brazilian version of Tolkien Gateway".
Etymology
Ramon comes from the Spanish Ramón, which represents the English Raymond. In Portuguese (the official and most spoken language in Brazil), it is actually Raimundo, though my parents named me Ramon (without the accent).
The name itself comes from Old French Raimund, which comes from Frankish *Raginmund ("counsel-protection, might-protection"), being the junction of Frankish ragin ("counsel, might") and Frankish mund ("hand, protection").[1]
The Frankish mund comes from Proto-Germanic *mundō (source also of Old English mund, the second element in Edmund, Sigismund, etc.), from PIE root *man- ("hand.").[1]
Other names
Raikko, which is my online alias, seems to be the Finnish pet form of Raimund[2], being the junction of Rai- (as in Raimund) and -kko (Finnish diminutive suffix)[3].
In Finnish, the R is always trilled. The ai is pronounced as in eye.
Pronunciation
Even though the Spanish Ramón is pronounced with a trilled R, in Brazil the letter R, when at the beginning of words, has the same sound as the English H, so Ramon is pronounced as "ha-mon".
The vast majority of Brazilians don't actually pronounce the letter N how it is "supposed" to be and we kind of change it to a /ŋ/ sound (I coudn't find the exact IPA symbol), so it's kind of pronounced as ha-moŋ.
