The Lion Is Loud and Proud is the name of a short[1] and curious[1] poem that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien.[2]
Poem excerpt
The Lion is loud and proud, and Strong —
is loud and proud, I said —[1]
Background
The poem was written around 1924 and features two voices arguing about the titular Lion. The second line was originally written as "is loud and proud, is what I said", but Tolkien rejected this for the current second line.[1]
Tolkien likely may have given the only manuscript containing the poem to E.V. Gordon because the manuscript currently resides at the Gordon archive in the University of Leeds.[1]
