Wizards of the Coast LLC is a gaming company, founded in 1990. While they initially produced role-playing games, they rose to fame when they published Magic: The Gathering in 1993. Magic was a collectible trading card game (the first of its kind) with a fantasy setting containing many aesthetic elements inspired by Lord of the Rings among other fiction. Since 1997 they also publish Dungeons and Dragons and for several periods they also published its official periodical Dragon Magazine.
In 1999 the company was acquired by Hasbro.
On June 23, 2023, Wizards released The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth a new Magic: The Gathering set with 451 cards that were new renditions of various characters and events from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
In August 2026, Wizards will release a second Tolkien-related Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond product, Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit.
